Advair Diskus is a prescription strength medication that is used to prevent and control the symptoms of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (known as COPD). The active ingredients in Advair Diskus are Fluticasone Propionate and Salmeterol Xinafoate.
Advair Diskus is a dry powder inhaler that is administered orally and should not be confused with liquid aerosol inhalers made from a combination of Fluticasone Propionate and Salmeterol Xinafoate. While Advair Diskus will not stop or treat a currently active asthma attack, it is used to help relieve chronic symptoms of wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath over time.
Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that acts as an anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the irritation and swelling that lead to respiratory attacks. Salmeterol works similarly to a muscle relaxant (bronchodilator) which decreases resistance in the airway, allowing better airflow into the lungs to ease difficulty in breathing
