Budesonide is a corticosteroid drug that is prescribed to treat inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Inflammation is beneficial to the healing process when you have been injured or if there is a threat of infection. However, ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and swelling because your immune system has mistaken your own tissues as a threat to do bodily harm. The alarm sounds and chemicals flood your colon which causes blood vessels to leak fluids and causes swelling as a way to contain the threat, either real or perceived. Budesonide prevents the inflammatory chemicals from being produced to ease the pain and discomfort that ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease can inflict.
